The Effect of Electroconvulsive Therapy on Plasma and CSE MHPG and HVA Concentrations in Chronic Schizophrenic Patients

Abstract
The effect of a series of ECT treatments on the plasma and CSF concentrations of MHPG and HVA were studied in the 10 patients suffering from chronic schizophrenia. The clinical improvement of the patients were assessed with BPRS weekly.
The concentrations of plasma and CSF MHPG significantly decreased after a series of ECTs. But there were no significant changes on the concentration of plasma and CSF HVA. And there were no statistically significant correlation between plasma
MHPG
concentration and the CSF MHPG concentration and between plasma HVA concentrations and the CSF HVA concentrations. Total BPRS scores and 5 symptom subscale scores except anxiety /depression subscale score were significantly decrease after a
series
of
ECTSs.
The percentile change on negative subscale and retardation /withdrawal subscale scores were positively correlated with the pre-ECT concentration of CSF MHPG.
These results suggest that ECT, although its mechanism is still unknown, may affect the central adrenergic system in schizophrenics and that the improvement of negative and retardation /withdrawal symptom may be related to the change on the
central
adrenergic system.
